An HONOR AWARD Winner PROJECT FOR THE IIDA 2015
The creation of a spa for the people with a busy lifestyle in the Bay Area is important to heal the stress of this modern society. Over 270,000 cars drive over the Oakland Bay Bridge every day, having a destination that can heal the body and mind is an important factor to continue the following day successfully. In fact, when designing this spa many elements which have the power to control a relaxing atmosphere where used to accomplish such goal.
Evoke Spa is a desirable place where a state of relaxation can be achieved. The goal was to create a spa with a strong sense of tranquility, by creating a dream like place composed by steam/FOG SYSTEMS and small flame fire places. Both elements are visually calming and accomplish the relaxing atmosphere that many desire after a stressful day of work.
Evoke Spa was inspired by the work of the artists Do Ho Suh. His art pieces are translucent architectural pieces at a 1:1 scale where people can go inside of them and experience an interior with a dreamy atmosphere. As a result the selections of the materials for the spa are translucent acrylics, glass, and travertine stone to create a soft look. Steam systems were also incorporated in the design to create a fogy atmosphere to enhance the dream like experience.
Evoke Spa will be constructed in the central anchorage of the Bay Bridge. The visitors will start the experience by transporting themselves in boats to get to the anchorage where the Evoke Spa will be. Once they arrive, they will be experiencing the effects of the steam systems that will be interacting with the translucency of the materials.
The Spa includes different specialty baths such as a flower bath, a sulfur bath, carbonic acid bath, mud bath, and different temperature baths. This INCLUDES a sauna, a gym, a yoga area, a relaxation area, and a light organic food restaurant on the second level.
